Can You Crack It? That Forgotten Netherlands Invention That Shaped the Contemporary Globe

There are numerous candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, though, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.

“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a simple merchant vessel required around ten sawyers working over 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven sawmills, the same amount of processed timber could be manufactured within a week.”

Thanks to this rapid mechanical saw, which turned logs into boards using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch were able to construct vessels faster than any other nation, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and cultural dominance across the continent and the globe.

The First True Industrial Machine

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, was “humanity’s first authentic industrial apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. A single part transformed the rotary movement into up-and-down action for the saw. Another component transformed the rotary motion into a lateral motion advancing the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead one precise increment per stroke.

“Every component seemed modest on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to integrate these parts so the machine acted within a perfectly controlled order, cutting on every descending motion and moving with each upward stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of fundamental parts.”
