The Evolution of a Cult can be marked by clear stages.

1. The Big Idea

A charismatic leader or coaches propose an innovative concept that promises a solution for struggling players.

Thus we find ourselves. They’re getting ready to confront the system overseas. The gunships are circling. Signs of trouble appear from within. One individual, vulnerable, nervous, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET written on his body as a statement, has emerged through the lines and is being led away with discretion towards an inconclusive loan stint at Derbyshire.

Do you ever miss the early days, when the world was still young? The days of Bazball 1.0, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Love-Bombing

Movement founders offer a new start, a brighter tomorrow, love, success among a group who all believe in the philosophy.

What was this thing back then? Just men on a balcony enjoying success. Ink. Muscles. Focus. Confident masculinity. Oh sure, The squad insist it’s not a real term, which is funny as it’s denied, what was that spectacle?

Yet it’s clear the concept. It’s the batsman playing a shot so outrageous it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of Ben Stokes in his final form, a look that says: focused titan, beard made of wood, natural look, truly contemporary you wouldn’t be surprised to look down and notice he’s fielding at mid-off stripped to the waist and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the batsman still being allowed addressing the media, out there looking like a cheerful animal formally attired, saying stuff like we are actively deconstructing the orange. And yes, the atmosphere, for quite a long time, was only good energy.

3. A New Life

Growth phase. Cohesion maintained through repetition of mantras. These principles can appear contradictory to prove commitment.

Am I alone? The reaction, the anger, the sense of betrayal post-defeat feels overblown, overdone. The performance was poor during the match, as is typical there. What has happened recently is just as interesting. Opposition to the style has now become the cult. We have a uniformly angry internet, disappointed commentators, pictures of upset supporters abroad disappointed by the short match, reminiscent of investors demanding recourse.

On the other hand, there is the broader context of the opponent’s mixed more culturally hard-wired exasperation with the aggressive tourists, stating, your cherished traditions and have fostered and nurtured as part of your identity culturally from us, it’s not serious in the end old boy.

Here lies the truth. All movements are similar. The approach was a phenomenon because cricket is a cult. Or rather, English cricket has always been a cult, a circle, a private event, an insular community with centuries of ceremonial past behind it. This has always been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the imperial sport of the nation, the pioneering brand. And notably, the nation has its own culture, a system of unknown levels, a place that literally still has a king.

The team have been sealed up in this environment for years. Attempting to break free, to foster positivity, they are simply replicating their own experience, building another enclosure, a limited community, but now with a new team and a coach promoting authenticity provided you conform.

Focus on the moment. Embrace challenges. Despite efforts, you remain stuck.
